A member of ZAFT's Creuset Team and the designated pilot of the Aegis Gundam.
His father is Patrick Zala, a member of the PLANT Supreme Council. His mother died in the ""Bloody Valentine"" incident.
He carries himself with a resolute demeanor, but is a kind and gentle young man who cares deeply for his friends deep down. He also enjoys tinkering with robotics as a hobby. He has given his fiancee Lacus Clyne many Haros, and gave Birdy to Kira Yamato to symbolize their friendship.
He and Kira have been friends since their days going to elementary school on the Moon together. After their reunion in Heliopolis, they ended up on opposing sides. Athrun bitterly resented having to fight his best friend.
It was when Nicol Amalfi was killed in action that Athrun became determined to take Kira down.
